The decision to leave my cushy job and start a venture of my own was one of the most difficult decisions I had to make. In fact, many dissuaded me from becoming a freelancer in India since we have nearly 15 million freelancers and a reputation for being one of the toughest markets in the world. Nonetheless, I took the plunge, and for me, the results have been encouraging.
I feel, among the many advantages of being a freelancer, flexibility is a primary one. Skillful people who work for corporations end up spending a fair amount of time dealing with bureaucracy. They often do not develop a range of skills and hence prefer freelancing as multiple projects lend them more learning opportunities. Also, being a freelancer allows them to work with a global base of consumers and opens up more revenue opportunities. A recent research reveals that 4 in 5 projects that freelancers secure come from other countries. In fact, as many as 49% of freelancers regularly get international work.
Notwithstanding the above, it is a steep learning curve. Primary among them has been to manage and track my invoices and payments. In fact, I would go the extent of saying that payments are the biggest bane of being a freelancer.
On top of this, there is a lack of timely payments which really irk freelancers.
PayPal does solve a lot of the payment problems faced by freelancers. Firstly, it is a very secure way to make and receive payments- extremely crucial as we work with clients we do not know and hence this business works on trust.
I have been using PayPal since 2006 when as a perpetually short- of- money student in the UK, I had to buy cheap items off the Internet. Being aware of so many horror cases of online fraud, only a PayPal secure sign-in made me feel at ease and I developed a sense of trust for the brand.
As someone who is constantly making and receiving payments outside of India, PayPal becomes the go-to payment platform as it allows transactions in over 26 currencies and 200 countries.
PayPal.me is a great way to request payments through a personalised link. Innovations such as these, I believe, separate PayPal from the rest. With PayPal.Me link, one can request specific amounts from clients for the job done and they, in turn, can make the payments. This is great for many small freelancers who have not yet made websites or are just starting out.
Over the years, many payment platforms have come and branched out into doing other things thereby diluting their core business. PayPal, for nearly 20 years, has stuck to its core mission of building the most convenient, secure and cost-effective payments solution. This relentless focus makes it the most innovative and trustworthy payment brand in the world and a true ally to us freelancers.
