New menu at SodaBottleOpenerWala

SodaBottleOpenerWala – the quintessential joint serving Parsi and Irani specialities has a new menu at its Khan Market and Cyber Hub outlets. We got to experience the new menu first hand – and this a welcome change that everyone is going to relish! There are new additions to the menu, and daily specials – the common thing – Parsi delicacies and some quirky contemporary twists!

Bacon Vada Pav is a classic example of the twist – the favorite street food, given a new avatar – the vada here is stuffed with and wrapped in bacon – taking the concept of vada pav to a new high. Boiled egg sandwich presents the grab and go fuel of Mumbai in a new form, served with french fries sprinkled with their in-house masala (if only they sold it, I will eat french fried every day at home!) – it replicates the flavor that you will get at a nukkad shop in Mumbai. Carnivore’s Bhel is a twist to the chowpatty favorite bhel – loaded with chicken, bacon and ham and cheeselings, this is the new definition of bhel. We really appreciated the thought of not mixing the cutneys with the bhel before serving, as it would have turned it soggy, and gives you the freedon to balance the dish as per your taste.

Tarela Rainbow Trout (subject to availability, sourced from Himachal Pradesh) makes an excellent dish with the in house Parsi spices. We have had the Tareli Macchi from the previous menu and just loved it. This one packs more punch with the fish imparting its own flavors to compliment that amazing marinate. Bambaiyya Chicken Biryani is delectable – mild flavours with a creamy raita – this one is going to be on our list of best biryanis going forward! Parsi style Jumbo Prawn has to be the star of the new menu. Thoughfulness in the presentation here too – the prawns & the curry were served separately – intrigued, we asked the Chef and got a reply – “to prevent over cooking of the prawn by the hot curry”. Coming to the taste, the prawns are absolutely fresh and can be had as a standalone dish as well. The curry is a traditional Parsi style with spices and coconut milk.

For our separate dessert stomach, we got one Matunga Coffee Cake, pretty strong flavors by any standard, so only try it if you like filter coffee and like it strong. The second dessert was a White Chocolate Orange Brownie, the brownie – chocolate and hazelnut served with a scoop of ice cream and orange zest syrup – absolutely sinful.

We also tried The BumSuckerWala and Bombay Julep from the beverage menu. The BumSuckerWala is an ode to the very famous Raspberry Soda – vodka, frozen raspberry and thyme and has an interesting story behind the name. If you are interested, ask your server or the manager, you will enjoy it 🙂

There are daily specials & combos on the menu, so don’t forget to look out for them on the day you visit and enjoy the speciality.
