Review: Seasonal menu @ Depot 29

Seasonal menus give you a reason to visit a restaurant again and again – for there is something new that you can try in addition to the regular favorites. The venue this time was Depot 29 – a local favorite for hand crafted burgers and tacos & having one-of-the-best waffle menus in the city. Spread over two floors and a terrace (which only opens in winters), this place has acoustics in place – which comes from the fact that one of the co-owners is a sound designer – so however loud the music is, you can hear everyone on the table without shouting. Dimly lit, the place has comfortable seating, but the tables near the windows can become uncomfortable in summers.

Service is impeccable, nothing took too long to come to our table and full assistance was provided by the staff and the owners alike in deciding what to order.

The new seasonal menu adds dishes carved out of fresh seasonal produce available in the market. Our tasting menu started with quinoa salad with pomegranate, mint and pine nuts – an appealing salad made out of the super food – pine nuts providing the crunch and the balsamic reduction just adds wonders. Chipotle marinated chicken, cheese & jalapeno empanadas are scrumptious – top it with the herb salsa (sweet) to balance the heat from the jalapenos if you want. Pulled pork and re-fried beans quesadilla is a must try – full of flavours of the meat, which is perfectly cooked. Banh Mi style chicken taco with sriracha mayonnaise is a fine creation with julienne of pickled veggies and chicken in a tortilla – add a spoonful of the sriracha mayonnaise in every bite – it just enhances the flavours.

Depot29 is known for it’s hand crafted burgers – we tried the new addition Asian chicken burger with teriyaki sauce & wasabi mayonnaise which comes with an option of skewered prawns – the patty is of minced chicken and the teriyaki twist is good, if you like teriyaki. Duck burger with green apple chutney stole the show with the tender duck meat and tangy green apple chutney. Shredded barbecued pork burger comes with a slice of grilled pineapple which imparts the sweetness in every bite, which is aptly balanced by the heat of the chillis. I so wanted to try the jack fruit burger, but the thought of missing out the famous waffles, made me say no (sic).

To keep it simple, we just ordered a half and half of wild berry compote and mascarpone cheese & chocolate gianduja with caramelized nuts waffles. I will only say, now I know why Depot29 has a name among the best waffle bar in city. Nothing else to say, just go and try it.

Depot29 offers a good choice in the beverage menu – MaicubaCoccarito – the former a tequila + cucumber drink was refreshing and the latter tequila + thyme in ginger ale, was good too. Virgin Gingranate has a refreshing pomegranate base & Virgin Monicatini is a
chilli spiced drink, the proportion of which was too much, I guess it would have been good with the alcohol in it, but without it, it was too hot!

Depot29 hosts gigs every weekend – musical nights, trivia nights and occasional others, details of which are available on their facebook page.
