Flipkart Ping! a new social shopping in-app feature.

“The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” – Steve Jobs.

I saw this quote in action when I went to a Bloggers Meet organized by Flipkart at F – Bar & Lounge, New Delhi on 25th August,2015.

Flipkart takes shopping to the next level and to be precise actually takes it back to the good old days when shopping was a family outing. In the new advertisements of Flipkart, one can see the good emotional connect drawn around people and how it has begun to play such a vital role in everyone’s life.

Hardly there are going to be people who wouldn’t know about Flipkart or have at least ordered from it once or have been a seller on it.

Flipkart understood that shopping online had become a singular process. What it did was figure out a way to make it more social. Old ways of shopping involved family or a bunch of friends going out at the malls.

So, thus began an era of shopping with #FlipkartPing. There is a new update available where in you can now chat with selected people from your phone book list with whom you would like to shop an item with.

There was a keynote address which delivered the underlying tone

and summarized the not only the core message of Flipkart but also the most important revelation of the event, the image search feature.

Flipkart’s Chief Product Officer, Punit Soni began the keynote by briefly telling us about what Flipkart stands for and what is its vision. With India, mobile shopping occupies 41%, it is the e-commerce platform for shopping.

He began to talk about the growing figures of mobile usage for online shopping and how ‘Ping is the first step towards a more social shopping experience online’.

Peeyush Ranjan, CTO and Head of Engineering, Flipkart said that as per their market research, the inability to shop collaboratively was something that its customers missed the most. Which lead to the creation of the Flipkart Ping, by Flipkart’s in-house technology team.

Currently in its beta stage of development, Ping will be available to customers through an invite only model in the first phase.

There was a Q&A round in which a gentleman asked how the picture recognition worked. Asked to step on stage, Punit and Peeyush, in less than a minute were able to get matching inventories of the same shirt that gentleman was wearing. Just Click on image search on Flipkart, select category and all the options available in its inventory will be displayed similar to the image.

Coming back to the event, the keynotes by both Punit and Peeyush were very eloquent and had crystal clear clarity.

With the way they have advanced in reading the customer need/desires and providing such an accessible technology I am sure Flipkart stands eons ahead from its competitors.

The event however was begun with a highly cliched stand-up comedy and concluded with Altaf Raja’s live performance. Somehow both the things put me off.

But I remain awed and proud of knowing the fact that Flipkart Team of developers (also the top developers as per google) are Indian and one of the world’s best.

You can check out the website here.

Don’t wait for the awesome shopping experience awaiting you. Download the App or the Ping update and click, search, select, share, get opinions and shop away! Never again miss out on any opportunity of owning something you like.
